Room With A Brew - History

A Note from the Owner:
Buon giorno! Having lived in a small village in the Italian region of Switzerland for three years, I've found myself to develop a true appreciation for Italian coffee. My family and I lived right on the border of Italy; I remember how we spent hours in the morningon the terazza in the ristorante next door, simply enjoying a good cappuccino.

Room with a Brew serves coffee in this Italian tradition that I remember quite fondly - now, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

~ Wendy Heidrich, 2007

Fun Facts:
The caffe society of Italy revolves around the espresso. (An espresso is a small amount of very strong, black coffee.)

Italian Espresso Vocabulary: (good to know if you're ever in Italy!)

solo espresso - "single," a normal amount, usually 1-1.5 oz of espresso.
doppio espresso - "double," twice the normal amount of espresso.
caffe lungo - "long coffee," a weaker espresso due to the drip consistency, but stronger than an americano.
caffe americano - espresso diluted with hot water.
espresso con molta acqua calda - literally, "espresso with a lot of hot water." Used in places where they don't have names for weaker coffees.
caffe con corretto - coffee flavoured with a liqueur called grappa.
grappa - liqueur made from grapes, which is like wine, but much stronger. (Unfortunately, we do not serve grappa at Room with a Brew.)

Espresso drinks are served in a variety of ways, but traditionally, Italians drink their coffee in piedi, or standing up! Even in Italian gas stations, stand-up bars are available at which to order and enjoy espresso beverages. Room with a Brew, in an attempt to duplicate this convenience, has a stand-up espresso bar so you can order your espresso and coffee as caffe e via, or "a coffee and away!"

In Italy, if you sit down for coffee service, you're likely to pay four times what you would at a stand-up espresso bar. This, we have not attempted to duplicate. We encourage both standing and sitting, both rushing and relaxing at Room with a Brew.

If you're looking for coffee in the true Italian tradition, then the espresso is the only way to go. However, if you prefer a more diluted coffee, we offer excellent house coffees as well.

In Italy, true cappuccino is very light and frothy, and is only consumed in the morning. At Room with a Brew, it's prepared the same way, but you can have it any time you like.

For colazione (or "breakfast") at Room with a Brew, we offer muffins, scones, croissants, and other pastries. They are also available all day. We also have a wide selection of chai and teas, as well as smoothies and other beverages.

Sit back and enjoy our Room with a Brew! Ciao!
